Shortening the chain by one link

• Chains with a pitch of up to and including 25.4 mm:

Remove 4 links at one of the ends of the chain, thus the two outer links and two inner links, wherein the outermost link is removed, and then install one double offset link that has a connecting link with spring clip or one outer link (pin link).

• Chains with a pitch that is equal to or greater than 31.75 mm:

Remove 2 links at one end of the chain, thus 1 inner link and one outer link, wherein the outermost link is removed, and then install 1 single offset link.

Shortening the chain by two links

Remove two links at one of the ends, thus one inside and one outside link.
Shortening the chain by one link

• Chains with a pitch of up to and including 25.4 mm:

Remove the adapter switch at the end of the chain.

• Chains with a pitch that is equal to or greater than 31.75 mm:

The chain ends with one single offset link, which also serves as a connecting link, remove the rivets from the outer link and replace these with one connecting link to close the chain.

Shortening the chain by two links

Remove 1 outer link by removing the outermost link on the end opposite the offset link.
  • The lubrication ensures that there is "liquid" running between surfaces that rub together, preventing them from getting stuck and reducing wear.
  • The lubrication protects the chain from corrosion.
  • Lubrication provides some noise reduction.
  • The lubricant dissipates the energy created by the friction.
Chains come standard with some type of preservative. This means that the chain is provided with some temporary protection in order to prevent rust during storage of the chain. After the chain has been installed, it should be cleaned and then re-greased. There are also lubricants, which can be applied directly to the chain without the chain first being cleaned. These lubricants are meant to be used with the preservatives.
First of all, the chain should not be under tension. That way the lubricant can optimally get between the pins and bushings. Automatic lubrication systems can best be installed from the pulling side of the drive.

Ensure that there is lubrication applied both along the length and along the width of the chain. Along the length of the chain, the hinges should be lubricated in an area where they are less loaded, so that the lubricant can penetrate more easily.

Along the width of the chain, lubricate between the plates to supply the lubricant to the hinge and between the inner plates and the bushes and rollers.

Lubrication can be accomplished in various ways, such as manually with a brush or oil can, with drips or splashes of lubrication, or lubrication under pressure (i.e. spraying, possibly with filtering and cooling of the oil).

The choice of lubricant depends on the type and the linear speed of the roller chain. With lifts and internal conveyors, manual and drip lubrication are often used, but automatic arrangements with a brush or sprayer can also be used.
The maintenance can be limited to periodically checking the design, performance and lubrication if the implementation is done in a proper manner. However, check regularly:

  • The alignment of the sprockets and the wear on the teeth.
  • The condition of the chain to determine the level of wear, as traces of wear may indicate incorrect geometry of the installation or improper contact with parts of the frame.
  • The wear on the hinges of the chain.
  • The wear on the plates of the balance the chains.
  • The wear on the bushes and rollers.
  • In case of wear of the chain of more than 2% of the length of the chain and more than 5% of the height of the plates, it is preferable to replace the chain and the sprockets and/or the rollers in their entirety.
